At an early age, Leonardo da Vinci moved to Florence, where he apprenticed with the painter and sculptor Verrochio. Da Vinci’s brilliance was obvious even at this early stage in his life. He often experimented with different artistic forms and techniques. Being surrounded by Italian art, he often used oils in his paintings . His work sparked a new style of art in Italy. In 1481, at the age of 30, da Vinci moved to Milan to work for the Duke of Milan. Although relatively few of da Vinci’s paintings and sculptures survive, two of his extant works are among the world’s most well-known and admired paintings. The first is da Vinci’s â€Å"The Last Supper,† painted during his time in Milan, from about 1495 to 1498. A oil mural on plaster, â€Å"The Last Supper† was created for the city’s Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie. A Filipino must conform to what is predominantly accepted and expected by the society. This distinguishing quality among Filipinos makes it an orthodox way of life. This has in some way shed a light on why grandparents customarily live with at least one family member generally the eldest child. Cultural Diffusion Sushi free essay sample

The hearth of sushi actually originated according to Alex Renton of The Observer in his February 26, 2006 article on sushi that long ago Southeast Asians uncovered that cooked rice actually ferments so the fish stored is preserved in this condition. Also, they can pack the fish in jars of cooked rice that can be edible for up to a year. The modern form of sushi was first originally a working class street food dish served at a street-food stall in the city of Edo, Japan in 1824. Yohei Hanaya, the stall’s owner shaped vinegar rice with his hands and then added a piece f raw fish for its convenience value. According to a July 26, 2011 article of The Guardian , sushi has faced its evolution over time from when rice vinegar surfaced around 1600 AD so people bring rice to ferment with preserving raw fish. Within its 2,500 years of evolution, sushi faces its obstacles that as it goes global can consequently decline of the raw materials since nearly all of the sushi fish are being thr eatened in the wild. We will write a custom essay sample on Cultural Diffusion: Sushi or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page As the sushi has changed over time, its incarnations will cater to the types of people to serve. The authentic sushi will end up as a premium delicacy for the rich. Street sushi will gradually include imitation fish that the industry finds this unattractive. The process of diffuse in sushi has slowly drifted into other parts of the world. In 1970, Americans first embrace sushi when the Osho restaurant opened in Beverly Hills (it is located next door to Twentieth Century Fox studios) with its menu of sushi consisting low-fat, high protein, and premium quality. Another innovation that diffuse sushi was the establishment of conveyer- elt restaurants as according to Alex Renton of The Observer in his February 26, 2006 article. This concept was devised by Yoshiaki Shiraishi of Genroku Sushi restaurants as he was innovative when placing the customers on 4-person tables at right angles towards the conveyer belt with its speed of 8cm a second. The areas of diffusion for sushi has spread out in a somewhat gradual direction. According to Alex Renton of The Observer in his February 26, 200 6 article on sushi, he discusses the trace of its globalization with the expat Japanese communities around the Pacific Rim in which an pportunity for these Japanese chefs to whom experienced their sushi apprenticeship to be exploited to adapt to the local tastes. The Tuna fish in sushi is considered a coveted topping that the Japanese has always exploit to market for its goods such as the country’s airlines in the 60’s promoting tuna for exchanges as a result of importing its Japanese-made electronics headed to the U. S. In that occasion, tuna has faced its endangerment by over fishing for sushi ingredients largely in Japan for the past several years. However in 2008, some modifications were made when Japan inally approved to shrink its catch on tuna by 5%. The crossover appeal of sushi diffused via the invention of the California roll. This delicacy catapulted sushi as an international treat made with cooked crab, avocado, and mayonnaise inside with an inside-out sush i rice roll with a strip of nori seaweed. The California roll was been invented in 1973 by chef Ichiro Manashita of L. A’s Tokyo Kaiken restaurant. A visit from the goon squad free essay sample

Sexism has been an ongoing issue since man has existed. Some have learned to accept and live with it while others simply will not accept it. Sexism fits into two different types of categories: Benevolent sexism and hostile sexism. In the novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, by Jennifer Egan, many of the characters are sexist towards women. Lou portrays both benevolent and hostile sexism while Bennie tends to portray hostile sexism only. Throughout the novel, Lou goes back and forth on how he treats women and his opinion on women. From the beginning of the novel, it is clear that sexism is an issue. Bennie is the first character that we see a clear sexist approach from. â€Å"The Mother Superior leaned forward slightly, tilting her head in a way that must have triggered something in Bennie. He lurched across the sill and kissed her on the mouth. † (Page 20). Even though Bennie knew it was wrong, he kissed Mother Superior. We will write a custom essay sample on A visit from the goon squad or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page She is a woman who is respected by all but Bennie believes that he could kiss her because he was the man and felt superior towards her. This is simply wrong in the fact that Mother Superior had devoted her entire life to celibacy but Bennie could not simply respect that. Bennie also shows his sexist side while communicating with his assistant, Sasha. â€Å"He sipped his gold-infected coffee and glared at Sasha’s breast. † (Page 22). In society, it is considered incredibly rude to stare at a woman’s breasts instead of making eye contacts with her. Bennie could simply avoid her breasts and just stare at Sasha herself but he chooses not to. Later on in the same chapter Bennie realizes how much Sasha has grown. â€Å"She seemed suddenly older, or was it just that Bennie seldom looked directly at her face? † (Page 28). This shows Bennie’s ignorance on how he has not noticed Sasha’s growth because he usually looks at her breasts or does not pay attention at all. This is degrading towards women because Bennie believes it is okay to directly stare at her breasts when it is quite disrespectful. In both these situations, with Mother Superior and Sasha, Bennie portrays hostile sexism because he does not take women seriously or treat them as equals. Lou is another character who portrays some sexism. Unlike Bennie, Lou also portrays benevolent sexism. Lou is a character who always tends to flirt with women. He usually tells women what they want to hear and is quite friendly towards them. Towards the beginning of the book, Lou is first seen when he picks up Jocelyn from a hitchhike. Even though Lou knows that she’s very young and that it will go nowhere, he keeps giving Jocelyn false hope. Instead of leading her on, Lou could have ended things with Jocelyn a while ago because she is around his son, Rolph’s age. He kept it going because he would receive sexual favors from Jocelyn. This is very common in our society today. Jocelyn gives Lou her all but is only getting her time wasted instead. Later in the novel, we are introduced to Lou’s current girlfriend Mindy. The actions that both Lou and Mindy take reflect on each other and cause them to act in sexist ways towards each other. Their sexism is mostly based from cause and effect. The stereotype is that usually men are the ones who are sexist towards women. The sexism between with Lou and Mindy is a little different since Mindy goes behind Lou’s back and cheats on him with Alfred. In this situation, Mindy becomes superior to Lou by claiming sexual power. Lou is noticed to be a character who mainly portrays benevolent sexism. When Lou’s son Rolph explains to Lou what happened between Mindy and Alfred, Lou’s opinion towards women change significantly. Lou says, â€Å"Women are cunts. † (Page 78). When Lou says this to his son, it is no doubt hostile sexism. Lou’s action is best explained in the â€Å"Ambivalent Sexism† article. â€Å"A sexist man might initially place a woman whom he is romantically interested on a pedestal but abruptly change his views when she rejects him, reclassifying her from â€Å"babe† to â€Å"bitch. †Ã¢â‚¬ When rejected, Lou does the same as other men. He quickly changes his views on Mindy. Shortly after Lou discovers that Mindy cheated on him, he marries her. This situation is very common in today’s society. When a woman cheats on her husband or boyfriend, the man treats it like a game. For them, it’s a competition for power. Lou asked Mindy to marry him because in that case, Lou would be gaining his power back and feel superior in the relationship once again. Mindy doesn’t finish school and decides to get married to Lou instead because it is believed that men’s power secures a high status. Even though Mindy doesn’t realize, Lou is now holding more power again. This situation between Lou and Mindy them portrays benevolent sexism. Sexism has been and will always be an ongoing issue between men and women. It is something that happens when a person does not even realize it. Lou and Bennie both know that some of their actions or words might be very hostile and sexist. Although they realize some of their actions, other times they don’t, or think they are positive, which shows their actions to be benevolent sexism. Both Bennie and Lou have also proved the theories mentioned in the article, â€Å"Ambivalent Sexism. † The way men and women treat each other will always be a competition for the higher power. A visit from the Goon Squad free essay sample In A Visit from the Goon Squad there are stories in each chapter in which many include Bennie Salazar (an old rock music executive) and his old assistant Sasha and his friends. The book follows the lives of these characters as they grow older and life sends them in different paths that they weren’t really supposed to go in. The book goes back in forth (from the past to the future) in the late 1960s to 2020 in and around New York City, sometimes the story goes into Africa, Italy, and California. The term â€Å"Goon Squad† was originated from groups with violent thugs would harm anyone that they believed against. Later on the term â€Å"Goon† referred to any violent thug and that’s where the Metaphor comes in. In the story Bosco (Bennie’s friend) in chapter â€Å"A to B† says â€Å"Time’s a goon, right† (96) which refers to the way time and fate rob most of the characters childhood in the book, innocence and success. We will write a custom essay sample on A visit from the Goon Squad or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Time is the stealth goon, the one you ignore because you are so busy worrying about the goons right in front of you. As Bosco continues to complain â€Å"How did I go from being a rock star to being a fat f*** no one cares about? † I chose this quote because although some of the characters do end up finding happiness, they prove it’s always a limited happiness and it is rarely in the form that you want it to be in. Though the progression of time depresses and disappoints many of the characters of A Visit from the Goon Squad, as the novel nears its close, Egan suggests an alternative. The advance and takeover of technology, as Egan admits via her final chapter, is inevitable. The quote that I picked was â€Å"5 sets of keys, 14 pairs of sunglasses, a child’s striped scarf, binoculars, a cheese grater, a pocketknife, 28 bars of soap, 85 pens† (2) I chose this quote because these items really symbolized her, these items came from shoplifting. It was to remind he of her shoplifting ways and it was always going to be there staring straight at her face. The way Sasha developed throughout the story mainly be growing up and taking chances. Before she was an interpersonal but now she can communicate way better than before. She used to steal things that weren’t hers but now although she still does that she holds herself back because what she has now which is a family and happiness. â€Å"There’s a fine line between thinking about somebody and thinking about not thinking about somebody, but I have the patience and the self-control to walk that line for hours days, if I have to. † I chose this quote because it shows me now that she does have the self control now when she didn’t have it before. The way Bennie developed was by actually settling down with someone when he use to have affairs. â€Å"Like all failed experiments, that one taught me something I didn’t expect: one key ingredient of so-called experience is the delusional faith that it is unique and special, that those included in it are privileged and those excluded from it are missing out. † This quote shows me that people learn from their mistakes/ past and so did he. Since many of the characters are in the rock music business it plays into one of the books themes which is aging and the loss of innocence. Many young kids now love the singers like Beyonce and Lady Gaga and they refer to Madonna as old school. There’s no way to avoid becoming part of the past. I have realized that becoming the past is inevita â€Å"We’ll rise up out of our bodies and find each other again in spirit form. We’ll meet in that new place, all of us together, and first it’ll seem strange, and pretty soon it’ll seem strange that you could ever lose someone, or get lost. † â€Å"I can’t tell if she’s actually real, or if she’s stopped caring if she’s real or not. Or is it not caring what makes a person real? † â€Å"There are so many ways to go wrong. All we’ve got are metaphors, and they’re never exactly right. You can never just Say. The. Thing. † I’m done. I’m old, I’m sad that’s on a good day. I want out of this mess. But I don’t want to fade away, I want to flame away I want my death to be an attraction, a spectacle, a mystery. A work of art. †
